Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective form of self-defense that teaches you how to fight in a close range and control your opponent. The objective of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to subdue your opponent through a variety of submission holds and joint locks without hurting your opponent. It’s the only style that has been tested and proven where the smaller person can immobilize a bigger person through technique. It’s so effective Jiu-Jitsu is one of the Core Martial Arts that Mixed Martial Arts fighters, including those that compete in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), must learn before stepping into the cage. Muay Thai
Simply put Muay Thai is the most devastating and effective for of stand-up Martial Art because it incorporates the whole body: Knees, Kicks, Fists, and Elbows as well as clinching your opponent. Every fight starts standing and Muay Thai gives you the tools and strategies to strike however possible. Practiced for over 1000 years, it’s Thailand’s unofficial national sport.Muay Thai was developed as a form of martial art for Siamese soldiers if they lost their weapons in battle. Once Thailand was at peace, Muay Thai became a form of physical exercise, self-defense, and personal advancement. Unlike other Martial Arts gyms that teach traditional Martial Arts like Karate, Taekwondo, or other Korean Martial Arts that focus on forms and base their grading on board breaking or how well you can do a “form”, we focus on real practical self defense skills and techniques. Everyone starts at Level 1 learning the foundation of the Muay Thai stance and fundamental striking techniques.
Kickboxing
At John’s Gym, you can take solace in the fact that we’re not an ordinary gym. We’re not into offering “cardio kickboxing” classes without teaching actual Muay Thai techniques. We also don’t have a free-for-all atmosphere where our instructors just teach what they want.When you sign up, we will provide you with a systematic curriculum that will help you grow and gradually produce the results you’re looking for. What’s more is that none of our classes are boring or useless.We’re always on top of making our curriculum engaging and enjoyable for our members. This is why many of our students have gone on to participate in real competitions, and some don’t even want to go home when our classes are over.

Whether you simply want to learn the sweat science of boxing for a fun workout our you’d like to compete, we can help you at John’s Gym. We are a family friendly boxing gym with a strict no meat head policy. Our boxing classes and sparring nights are fun and safe, and allow you to grow at your own pace.
Women’s Only Self Defense Classes
We are proud to offer one of Austin’s first complete women’s self-defense classes in a small group setting – minimum 5 women. Most women’s self-defense classes focus on defending an attacker while standing, leaving the ground portion completely out of the equation. When attempting to subdue an attacker it is very important to know how to defend standing up, but just as important, if not more importantly, what do to when on the ground. Each of us is aware of a woman that has been put into a compromising situation where they felt their safety was at risk. Perhaps we even know of someone that has been attacked by a stranger or even a “loved one”. Perhaps that person is you. John’s Gym has put together a women’s only self-defense class to help women of all ages be able to PROPERLY defend themselves. John’s Gym is a family fitness and martial arts gym where we offer a wide variety of fitness and martial arts programs, and now we’re putting it all together for practical self-defense use.
