Every day, search engine optimization (SEO) continues to develop and evolve, leaving behind ancient practices that used to work in the dust.
While most traditional digital marketing tactics are still effective to this day, there have been countless SEO changes that have resulted in the birth of new SEO practices that cannot be ignored.
If you are focused on running an online business, it’s important that you stay away from outdated, “zombie-like” SEO techniques (techniques that should be dead, but aren’t for some reason).
Not only are these practices extremely ineffective, but these five outdated SEO practices will also be counterproductive to your SEO strategy and you must avoid them like the plague!
1. Keyword Stuffing
This is seriously one of the most widely-used tricks in the SEO industry. For years, webmasters have tried to rank well for every possible keyword combination. To do so, they created website content stuffed with dozens of similar keyword phrases.
This underhanded technique was maybe successful in say – 2005. However, search engines know what keyword stuffing looks like and they treat these attempts as methods for manipulating search results.
Therefore, if you believe that stuffing a lot of different keyword phrases in your content will be effective in today’s SEO landscape, you’re going to have a very rude awakening. It doesn’t work anymore.
2. Article Spinning
Unfortunately, this SEO trick is still used to this day. Article spinning is simply the black-hat tactic of trying to re-create quality content using different phrases and words.
Whether the attempt was done by a software or by a human, the end result typically looks like a gargled mess that makes the same points as its source material.
Therefore, there’s really no surprise that article spinning isn’t effective anymore.
It may be true that AI is becoming better at creating content, but anything generated by a machine will almost always result in a final product that’s of a lower quality than what a human can produce.
3. Buying Links
Like most SEO techniques, if it’s shady, you probably shouldn’t do it.
Contrary to what most webmasters will tell you, buying links is no different. In the past, it was okay to purchase a wide variety of links pointing back to your site.
Now, Google has gotten much smarter and is able to distinguish between high-quality links and farmed links. Google also can tell that something is fishy if your site contains too many unnatural backlinks.
Sorry. Buying links doesn’t work anymore, so you’re going to have to earn your links the legitimate way by creating useful content for your audience.
4. Exact Match Domains
You have to admit that people have developed some very creative black-hat tactics to circumvent all of the hard work it takes to build SEO organically.
Case in point, many webmasters created URLs that contained high-ranking keywords instead of the actual name of their business.
URLs like “topSEOlosangeles.com” is a bit confusing and misleading because it doesn’t really tell your website visitor anything about your company.
That’s why your URL should contain just your business name and not any overused jargon. Overall, if you run a good company that sells amazing products or services, you don’t have to resort to using ineffective and spammy SEO techniques.
Frankly, if you want to succeed at SEO, you must do what’s right and take no shortcuts.
