Yahoo Shutting Down Yahoo Groups on October 21

The one time king of the search engines, Yahoo, announced today the official shutdown of its platform’s groups on October 21, 2019. The news does not come as much of a surprise to existing users with Yahoo e-mail accounts and/or group memberships. Since the acquisition of the brand by Verizon Communications in 2016, the telecommunications giant spearheaded the move to revamp and revitalize Yahoo’s online services. This includes Yahoo Groups – which for a long time – served as vital entities for both social and business engagements.

According to the announcement, all Yahoo Groups content will be removed by December 14, 2019. Existing users will no longer be able to upload new content to groups but their pages will remain on the network. This move follows the closure of Google+ back in April of this year due to security and data breaches. Google also cited the dominance of new social networks as another reason for its discontinued support of the service.

This cements the fact that older search engines and social media outlets can no longer compete with the big-hitters. With Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram continuing to grow by leaps and bounds, legacy platforms are on their way out. While Yahoo does remain a competitor in the search-engine realm, Google continues to sit atop the social media totem pole. The domination of Google and Amazon (for global marketplace shoppers) has even led to worldwide businesses refiguring their presence across multiple online networks.

Which content will be removed from Yahoo Groups?

Yahoo is planning on removing the following content from Yahoo Groups on December 14, 2019:

If you have a business or brand group on Yahoo Groups, now is the time to save all your content before it’s removed. Simply sign in to your Yahoo account and download the files from the group’s page. Like the Google+ content acquisition, you will have to request Yahoo to send you the data. Once the content has been gathered and saved, Yahoo will send you a link via e-mail.

Can people still join existing Yahoo Groups?

Moving forward, Yahoo Groups will be harder to join for the general public at large. Any currently public groups will become private or restricted. While they will still have a place in the search results, users will have to submit requests to join these groups.

Today’s announcement of the closing of Yahoo Groups was done somewhat quietly. While the news has spread like wildfire across the web, Yahoo only mentioned the closure in a support document to its platform’s users. The service will only exist in minimal capacity after December 14^th. Similarly, administrators will have limited access to page tools and features.

While the closing has puzzled some users, many have already migrated to other social networks with wider reaches for content distribution. Still, there are others – like Jason Scott of the Internet Archive – that have vowed to preserve as much content from the Groups as possible. With Yahoo collaborating with other providers like Google for shared ad revenue, is there a chance that it might revive Groups for brand owners in the near or distant future? Only time will tell.

Google’s John Mueller explains that sites lose rankings after a Core Algorithm Update because the new algorithm has concluded that some sites offer more relevant than others. Mueller reinforced the notion that sites do not lose rankings after the algorithm update because they did anything wrong or because they are harmful sites with bad information.

Google’s core algorithm update changed the way that Google determines which pages are relevant to users, therefore increasing rankings on pages that meets these new quality standards. Mueller says that it is not a matter of fixing anything website admins are doing “wrong,” but it is more of a matter of Google deciding that some pages are less relevant that originally determined.

Sites are experiencing two significant kinds of losses following June’s Broad Core Algorithm Update:

Ranking Position Losses: Based primarily on new relevancy parameters, some sites have gained positions, which result in previously ranked pages to drop search result positions.

Complete Loss of Ranking: Sites that have entirely lost rankings are indeed rare. In these cases, site producers need a thorough evaluation of the SERPs as well as overall keyword and content strategy.

What’s the Deal with the July Google Search Ranking Updates?

Those who are in the SEO industry always keep an eye on the Google search ranking results, since they’re indicative of emerging trends. Between July 11th and 18th of this year, they picked up on some serious volatility. Analytics tools from various platforms confirmed the shakeup. But what did it mean?

Though various SEO publications and sites have reached out to Google, there has not yet been any official response. John Mueller of Google, usually the figurehead who speaks for the company, has been tight-lipped about what is going on.

What Do the Tools Indicate?

For those companies like Seo Insights that drive up website rankings for their clients, any significant fluctuation is a reason to pay attention. That’s because a ranking shakeup is indicative that Google may be implementing an update, and every time that happens, SEO strategies will need to be adjusted.

Several analytics tools, including RankRanger, Algoroo, Moz, and SEMRush, all show that in the middle of July, a seismic change occurred in Google. The fact that the Google brass hasn’t come right out and said that this is a major ranking update counts for little because they haven’t denied it, either.

John Mueller stated in a video hangout on Search Engine Land, “Updates. I don’t have any update news. I saw a lot of blogging and tweeting on updates, so I don’t know what is specifically happening there. I don’t know. We will see. I haven’t chatted with Danny (Sullivan) about that. So, not quite sure. But we always do updates. I think it is more about if this is one of those core updates and which month will it be called after.”

More on this Possible Update from Data Providers

Those who are interested have done some more digging with data providers, like RankRanger. The consensus seemed to be that the fluctuation wasn’t following any patterns that were easy to identify. For instance, the rank fluctuation increases couldn’t be said to be taking place specifically in niches like food and drink, retail, finance, health, or travel. SEO companies need to keep an eye on all of these since many of their clients for which they are creating content are likely to fall into these categories.

What Can Be Made of this Latest Update?

For SEO companies, it’s probably best to stick with the conclusion put forth by RankRanger and SearchMetrics. Both entities feel that this shakeup in ranking indicates that an update did indeed take place to the Google algorithm. It was more significant than one of their routine tweaks, but perhaps falling short of one of the massive “core” updates that get an official name from Google.

Google might still release a statement at some point on this “Maverick” update, as some SEO companies have already dubbed it. For the moment, though, any SEO company should at least be cognizant of what is happening, because the website ranking for many of their clients may have changed. That’s what matters most to SEO companies, of course, and that’s the reason to monitor Google so closely.

How Smaller Sites Can Rank Higher on Google with a Few Adjustments

Having a website is a great way to promote your products and services to mass audiences. However, how does a smaller site compete with more established sites and brands? Can your site rank higher on Google even with competitors using the top keywords for higher conversions? The answer to these questions lies in Google’s latest diversity update. The latter rolled out earlier this month and is designed to help smaller sites rank better for competitive keywords.

Here are some essentials of this recent update:

Google will limit the number of times a domain (URL) can appear in a single SERP.
No more than two URLs from the same domain will appear within a single SERP.
The update helps upstarts and smaller websites compete for keywords and rankings previously dominated by heavy hitters.

With this in mind, you should adjust your keyword searches to see which ones are not in use by competitors. However, make sure to bid for higher-ranking keywords as well; your site may have a chance to rank better among seasoned sites with high-volume conversions.

Is the New Update Working for Webmasters?

While the rollout is still relatively new, Searchmetrics continues to analyze and assess its results. So far, the study conducted between March 2019 – June 2019 shows that zero results were found with more than 3 URLs from one domain. Similarly, 3.5% of searches containing 3 URLs from one domain were down 6.7%. This means the promise to limit domains from hogging SERPs with more than two ranking positions is working. Here are some more findings from the recent study:

2% of searches with two URLs from the same domain are up by 1%.
3.5% searches returned unique domains for queries and keyword searchers alike.
Google is also correlating search/user intent with site diversity to showcase smaller brands that want to become competitive.

As a site owner, you must continue to produce relevant and industry-specific content. While Google is opening the doors for smaller brands to compete, they will not sacrifice quality for site visibility. Similarly, you cannot increase your keyword volumes in the hopes of ranking better in SERPs with just one domain. Simply adjust your keyword sets to reflect brand messaging and URL correlation. Do not forget to include images, videos, and content lists for featured snippets as well.

Other Adjustments for Smaller Sites

While Google’s diversity update is in full swing, it will not affect all search results. In other words, the change will not be reflected across the board for all site owners. In fact, this is more of a slight adjustment than an actual update to existing algorithms. Still, Google will continue to show more results from single domains depending on content, context, and relevancy. They will also scrub and crawl keywords to give smaller sites better chances of competing with bigger brands. While sub-domains will be treated as a single domain, you can still promote your main URL and sub-site (blog, store, etc.) within a single SERP. If this is not sufficient for promoting your brands to local or geo-specific audiences, here are a few more things you can try:

Target keywords (low and high relevance) that bigger sites aren’t interested in competing on.
Long-tail keywords are now the norm as opposed to the exception. Expand your bases with detailed keywords that help users find exactly what they are looking for. For example, “Austin SEO” to “best SEO agency in Austin for marketing”.
Provide more valuable content for users and aim to become a relevant resource in your niche. This can bypass the competition that tends to scale back on this vital technique.

On June 6th, Google announced an update to its search results with the goal of increasing “site diversity.” The Google Search update will attempt to provide greater domain variety by limiting the number of results from any particular domain to two or less for a specific search query.

Greater Diversity of Google Search Results

Throughout the years, SEO experts have been tasked with finding unique and creative ways to overcome the fact that Google’s top search results often show too many listings from the same site. This can allow one company or domain to dominate a particular search query.

So in the past, if you searched for a specific keyword, you might see 4, 5, or even more of the top 10 results from the same site. With this new site diversity update, Google is now aiming to not show any more than two results from the same domain for any query.

There Will Be Exceptions to the Rule

Google will maintain the right to veer away from its “two results” limit if they deem it appropriate. One theory on why Google might do this is to allow more accurate results for branded queries. Of course, there’s another exception. Google will reserve the right to treat a subdomain and root domain as different sites if “deemed relevant” for diversity.

The Update Will Only Affect Core Results

For now, Google is containing the update to core results only. Other On-SERP SEO factors like carousels, snippets, and top stories won’t be affected.

When Google announced it was rolling out another core algorithm update in late March, experts and analysts in the search engine optimization (SEO) field speculated what it would mean.

Past Google updates incorporated major features like “neural matching,” and the March update also called “Florida 2,” threatened to seriously change the game for digital marketers.

However, more than a month after the update’s launch, results have largely been mixed.

For the most part, the newest update has highlighted the importance of quality content and links, but other sites have seen their rankings drop precipitously.

One month after Florida 2, here are the major highlights from the update.

1.) Quality Matters Most

The single most significant result from Florida 2 is the continuing importance placed on quality content that helps users.

What that means for websites is that content that crams keywords and doesn’t serve a function for your online users will have a corresponding decrease in rankings. For content managers, the new update continues Google’s push to reward content that is unique, authoritative, and offers a definite resource to visitors.

For websites that keyword pack, some early results have shown a sizeable drop in ranking after the update.

Keeping in line with recent updates, it’s essential for content managers to continue to highlight quality content that serves a benefit to visitors.

2.) Little Volatility for Publishers, Not So Much for Small Businesses

Many large B2C publishers have shown little volatility in search engine rankings after the update, but rankings drops and rises have been more fluid for smaller companies.

For many big publishers, the underlying SEO has primarily stayed the same, but smaller businesses have seen some fluctuation with the new rules. The most substantial results from the update for small businesses have been significant moves in rankings based on inbound links.

If your website has been affected by a rankings drop, it might be helpful to undertake a full audit of your inbound links and determine whether your website has been affected by the new update. For SEO, building website authority means attracting quality inbound links that boost your site’s standing.
